Raise It Up is an innovative violence prevention program aimed at teenagers in Lower Mainland high schools and the influential adults in their lives. Raise It Up acknowledges the value and worth of our youth while addressing the root causes of violence. The program was developed as an Instructional Framework designed to be easily integrated into existing high school curriculum in British Columbia. Through a series of exercises youth examine the root causes of violence by addressing such concepts as equality, the implications of prejudiced attitudes, stereotyping and discriminatory behaviour and the process of oppression.
What will Students Learn?
During the Instructional Framework, students will learn how to:
- Investigate the root causes of violence
- Think critically about how socialization through the media impacts our bodies and minds
- Think about how we value one another in society and to strive for equality
- Begin thinking about what leadership looks like and what it means to intervene as an “up”stander
Through Raise It Up, youth will be empowered and equipped with the tools to stand up against violence when they see it in their schools, in their homes and in their communities.
Between frontline service delivery and dedicated prevention and leadership education, WAVAW is committed to mentoring and guiding youth to create a future society free from violence.
