In the face of jaw-droppingly awful, fatphobic advertisements like this billboard, it’s inspiring to see folks challenging the culture of hatred surrounding the diversity of human body shapes and sizes.
Some examples that have come to our attention lately:
Lindy West over at Jezebel calls for solidarity against body-shaming among women of all sizes–and offers a much-needed reminder that fat-shaming is rooted in systemic oppression in a way that thin-shaming just isn’t.
Kelly Martin Broderick recounts how a Facebook photo of her was stolen and turned into a fatphobic, anti-feminist meme–and how she fought back with her big awesome crew of allies.
An ex-weight-loss counsellor has written a letter of apology to her former clients. While the piece contains some problematic content, it’s still amazing to see a former insider of the weight loss industry debunk some dangerous health myths and expose the physical and emotional devastation that can be inflicted by diets.
