We provide support services to survivors of sexualized violence who are of marginalized genders: women, trans, nonbinary, Two-Spirit, and gender diverse people.

All of Salal’s support services are FREE and CONFIDENTIAL. We understand that not every survivor’s journey looks the same, which is why we provide a variety of support services including emergency crisis support, hospital accompaniment, criminal legal system support, Elder support, individual counselling, support circles, workshops, and more. All Salal programs and services are developed in collaboration with the communities we serve. Our team is comprised of people with lived experience within these communities to ensure that every aspect of our operations includes the voices of BIPOC people, people of marginalized genders/gender diverse people, and people of varying socioeconomic status.

What is Sexualized Violence?

Sexual violence is an overarching term that describes any form of violence, involving or not involving contact, that uses the means of sexuality to perpetuate harm. Sexual violence is centred in power and control, taking many different forms including:

  • Sexual abuse
  • Rape
  • Incest
  • Catcalling
  • Stalking
  • Consent Through Coercion (guilt, threats, etc.).
  • Sexual assault
  • Indecent or sexualized exposure
  • Degrading sexual imagery
  • Cyber harassment
  • Trafficking
  • Substance facilitated sexual assault
  • Sexual exploitation
  • Sexist jokes
  • Harassment
  • Spreading rumors about someones sexuality
  • Voyeurism

Salal Connect

Salal connect is a text and online chat support tool that allows survivors of sexualized violence to receive accessible and confidential crisis support. Our text and online chat service is available Monday-Friday 9am-1am PT, Saturday 9am-5pm PT, and Sunday 9am-11pm PT.

VICTIM SERVICES

Sexual Assault Response Team

The Sexual Assault Response Team provide emotional and crisis support, intake and assessment for all of Salal’s services, and accompaniment to hospital, police, and medical appointments as well as appropriate referrals in the community.

Hospital Accompaniment

Support workers can accompany survivors seeking medical attention from the Sexual Assault Service team at Vancouver General Hospital 24 hours a day, and UBC Urgent Care until 10 pm, 365 days a year.

Police and Court Accompaniment

Our Victim Services Program offers support, accompaniment, information, and referrals for survivors engaging with the criminal legal system (police and court system).

COUNSELLING

Counselling Program

Salal offers individual counselling and support groups free of charge to survivor who’ve experienced sexual assault. Bus tickets and childcare subsidies can be prearranged.

SPECIALIZED SUPPORT SERVICES

Gender Diverse Support Services

Salal offers sexual assault services developed in collaboration with community for trans survivors. All self-identified trans, Two-Spirit, nonbinary, and gender diverse survivors can access these services free-of-charge. Indigenous Support Services

Salal provides counselling developed in collaboration with community for Indigenous survivors, and self-identified family members of MMIWG2S. Sessions are confidential, free-of-charge, and incorporate traditional Indigenous healing approaches.
